Personal Coaching History

Personal Coaching History

Burnside was always a natural and well rounded athlete throughout his middle and high school career.  He was a well rounded athlete excelled in every sport he participated in.  During his senior year at Enloe High School, he was a captain of the cross country team that was conference champions that also finished 4th at states, the indoor track team in which he anchored the 4x800 to a 3rd place finish at states, the wrestling team in which he dominated the 152 lbs. weight class to a eighth place seed in heading into the state championships.  He was a one man assault team dominating the conference at the 400 meters, 800 meters and anchored the 4x400 and 4x800 to conference championships. As a sophomore in high school he ran a blistering third leg in the young men's 4x100m helping his team to earn a silver medal in the first 'Bahamas Games', recognized as the Bahamas National Track and Field Championships. In the eighth grade Burnside teamed up with fellow classmates at St. Augustine's College (high school in the Bahamas) to set national youth records at the 4x200m and the 4x400m.

After high school he went on to win numerous road races such as The Great Raleigh Road Race 5K, The Durham City of Medicine 5K, The Clayton Chase of Champions 5k,  and The Walnut Creek Classic 5K.  As a freshman at Saint Augustine's College he finished 5th in the 5K in the 1992 CIAA Conference Championships.  Unlike most athletes in their prime, Burnside took a position as track coach for the Capital City Comets then moved into a more senior role with the Tri-City Blazers where he could share his knowledge of Track and Field with the youth in the community. At age 18 he took his first student, Ursula McLean to the USATF National Championships in Gainesville Florida where she finished fourth in the 800m. (3 years later Ursula went on to continue her career at North Carolina State University competing in 800m and the Heptathlon)

Burnside would then go on to graduate Magna Cumme Laude with a degree in what else but 'Mathematics', but not after sweeping the NC USATF Sectional championships for 4 consecutive seasons and having all but 1 athlete qualify for regionals in 1998, Burnside was known for his 1-2-3 sweep that was always expected when he had three or more runners in any one event.  That same year he coached  another athlete, Detric Branch  to a shattering performance guiding him to becoming state champion in the 100m, 200m, Long Jump, and 4x100 Relay.  Detric lead the 'ALL Burnside Sprinting Core' that also consisted of B. Hope, D. Swinson, E. London, D. Cofield, and S. Palmer, all of which went to college on track and/or football scholarships.

Krystle (Thinking of Burnside)
But the apple of his eye was none other than Krystle Medlin, a young lady that Burnside coached to her first 800m state championship as a sub-bantam(8yr old) running against the bantams. Burnside gave Krystle all of his knowledge for running the 400m and 800m to the point in which she took the state by with a passion by defending her title every year and by winning by an unsurmountable 170m margin in 1998.  Krystle would go on to absolutely dominate NC track and field throughout high school and continue her success at Hampton University.

Wayne (Before the Fame)
Burnside continued his success in training the total athlete by mentoring and providing private training to Wayne C. Davis II, who came to him at age 9. Wayne showed signs of being an exceptional athlete but no one, except Burnside expected Wayne to win his first national championship in the hurdles at age 12. After many long nights at NC State track and Wayne's National Championship, Burnside, realized that this athlete was going to a level he himself had only dreamed about. He then told Wayne that he would get him to the hurdles and his hurdle coach will get him through the hurdles, thus installing the "START" that Burnside developed for himself but never got a chance to use.  After three years of perfecting the "START", in 2007, Wayne Davis II set a  Youth World Record

“I have been working really hard on my start for the last few years. I know that my start is so good that it can carry me through the entire race. My weakness is the end but today I felt relaxed in the last part of the race.”

With his focus now on more than just track and field...

Josh (All Grown Up Now)

Burnside knows that there are many more Burnsides out there.  Yes, many more athletes that participate in no name sports like women's basketball, track and field, wrestling, and cross country. They are no name because they get no love by the media, so Cyril Burnside founded Future Collegiate Athletes of America giving him the ability to help more than just a handful of athletes. He found this to be a need especially for female athletes when he directed his attention to coaching basketball and continuing his success again at the developmental level.  In a span of 5 seasons Burnside finished no worse than third in regular season standings and won both the girl's championship followed by an impressive boy's championship in his final two back to back seasons.

His goal is to provide an avenue for the unknown athlete to become known, not so they can get into the NBA Draft, but more realistically, so they can use sports as a means for funding a college education.  Burnside's past success, some would say is enough to shine a bright light on his vision, but his future success with the athletes to come will be only fit as a reward for his hard work and dedication as he continues to give back to our community.

Athletes Past and Present

Burnside has helped many athletes accomplish that goal of funding a college education.  He worked with the following athletes in a direct coaching and mentoring role.  This list contains the most notable athletes or most recent, thus representing some of the over 1 million dollars worth of scholarships awarded to student athletes in which Burnside has helped.

Current Projects

Current Projects

Burnside currently works with SignedSeniors Basketball Training and Exposure as the Director of Student Athlete Development, Recruiting and Statistics. In this role he is responsible for recruiting and building teams for the very highly competitive showcase travel basketball season. In his first season Burnside assisted nine students with obtaining basketball scholarships.  The need for training and exposure for prep athletes will continue to grow as more and more girls start playing sports.  In 2010, he became an owner in the Women's Blue Chip Basketball League, by forming the RDU Sting Women's Semi-Professional Basketball Club that will cater to women that mainly want to continue playing after college.  In this role he brings his experience with providing exposure to the next level and will direct his efforts to working with professional scouts and agents in the United States and on the International stage.

Future Plans

Future Plans

In the future, Cyril plans to continue doing what he enjoys doing. His love for developing players gives him satisfaction.  He has been quoted by saying to his athletes  'Everybody wants you when you are good, but nobody wants you when you are not good'.  He does not look for the glory but he does ask for his athletes to give him some credit whenever they can. You see, he believes in the coach that spends the practice time with the athlete should get the glory as long as he gets some recognition, which is only fair for a man with 1,000s of volunteering hours and a library of athletes that have received scholarships because of his volunteering.
